Bubbles in Space
I chose the bubble glaze design in particular because it was not like the regular glazing process of any one simple color but it was also achievable for me being a ceramics 1 student. This is a process that I stumbled upon while brainstorming showcase ideas with a friend whose work inspires me. I made a set of bowls that were put through the bubble glaze process consisting of space colors: purple, blue, and black. The process of bubble glaze includes dipping the bowl in white glaze and then mixing my glaze (color of choice) with water and soap in a cup. Then I take a straw and blow into the cup of this mixture to form bubbles and I let them flow into and around my piece to create bubble formations. The bowls I created are functional, the second glaze applied gives the pieces a shiny finish, and the contrasting dark purple and black mixing with a light blue brings them together. I’d like those who look at my art to see that contrasting concepts such as bubbles and space can come together.
